Explore the history of Washington State geographically with this nifty map app! As you travel around Washington, learn about the history that happened right where you are, or scroll over the map to get a better spatial understanding of where historical events occurred. This app turns your iPhone into a perfect travel companion and valuable educational tool.
PastMapWA has a user-friendly map interface that features content from HistoryLink.org, the online encyclopedia of Washington state history. Map pins indicate essays on historical topics relevant to specific places, including Washington States counties, cities, towns, ports, and other selected places. Different essays are visible depending on which of the three map levels youre on. Just tap the pin to read an essay and view historic images.
PastMapWa brings historical information to mobile technology as an aid to students, tourists, and those interested in the past of a place. Using GPS information, the app can locate the user on the map and show pin links to relevant city and other histories near the users location.
This app immediately reflects updates to the HistoryLink.org website, but does not feature all of the sites content. To access the complete database, HistoryLink.org is available online or via the app menu item ìGo to HistoryLink.org.î More than 5,600 essays and additional features can be searched or browsed with the app using a web browser interface.
This application was funded by Historylink.org in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Commerce and the Association of Washington Cities. It is released by the Word-Ware development group.
Watch for future map-based history applications from Historylink.org!
